What is Learning for Life?

OSML is proud to sponsor a new STEM-based program for young men and women ages 14 to 20 that is part of the Learning for Life Program. The first meeting will be Tuesday, April 18, 6:30 PM at OSML.

What is Learning for Life?

Learning for Life is a component of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), but as part of the Exploring program, Post 3141 is open to young men and women ages 14-20. The Exploring program descended from the BSA Exploring Program and focuses on career experiences.

Post 3141 will emphasize STEM:

  • Maker Movement

  • Robotics

  • Emphasize Competitions

  • Learning skills and managing technical teams

Post Specifics

There will be two post meetings per month at Open Source Maker Labs in Vista. The group will meet on a weeknight 6:30-9 PM, Tues, Wed or Thurs - depending on members’ choice. Each month will also include one or two additional “field” activities. Many will be on weekends (rocket launchings, competitions, etc…). Some will be on weekdays (visits of local tech companies).

Small-group or individual projects can be worked on outside of these post meetings; post members will decide meeting schedule

What will we do in the first 4 months?

  • Community outreach/recruiting

  • Hackaday World Create Day on 4/22/2017

  • MakerEdx Event at CS San Marcos on 5/6/2017

  • April to June:  Rocketry

  • June to August:  Underwater Robotics

The members decide what we do after that. We will compete in existing competitions, and can develop and host our own.

Learning for Life vs Scouting

The post will not replace scouting. Current members are encouraged to retain their membership in their scouting units. There are no uniforms, but we will have post t-shirts. There are no ranks, but those members in scouting will find we complete many scouting advancement requirements. Cross registration in scouting not a requirement.

Post 3141 and FIRST

The first three months of 2018 is the FIRST build season. Post 3141 will not compete with FIRST - many members expected to rejoin their FIRST teams. Members without teams will be assisted in joining a team. A low-level program will exist for those who can’t commit to a FIRST build season.
